Celebrating International Women’s Day in our Neighbourhoods

Women across Jigsaw’s neighbourhoods rallied together in a show of solidarity for International Women’s Day on 8 March.

Neighbourhood Engagement Officer Minaz Aslam organised several creative workshops in partnership with Oldham Coliseum Theatre, all encouraging residents to try something new.

Up to 45 ladies attended the workshops which ranged from confidence building exercises to learning circus skills. The day was rounded off with lunch and a chance for them to build new friendships.

Minaz said: “It was great to see so many women attend this celebration event and try activities out of their comfort zone, learn new skills and make new friends. With special thanks to Alyx Tole and Perveen Hussain for hosting the day.”

At the Jigsaw Homes Central Hub in Dukinfield, 15 residents from the Craft Café took part in a creative, thought-provoking afternoon to celebrate the important awareness day.

Organised by John McGlynn and the Royal Exchange Theatre, the women shared afternoon tea together and designed aprons, sewing inspirational messages onto each one.

As the household garment has historically been seen as a symbol of oppression, it has now become representative of femininity and function in the evolution of women’s rights.

John said: “The women enjoyed celebrating this special day together and also the milestone of the Craft Café reaching its first anniversary running at the hub.”
