Climate change happens slowly so we have been kicking the problem into the long grass for some time. Scientists have in fact known about climate change for over 100 years; you can’t burn 1000 years of fossilised sunshine in the blink of an eye without it having an impact.
A recent report has shown that the main problem is due to over-consumption. According to the UN, the world’s wealthiest 1% produce double the combined carbon emissions of the poorest 50%. The authors of the report want to deter SUV drivers and frequent fliers – and persuade the wealthy to insulate their homes well.
It is sometimes hard to get motivated to do anything when you hear figures like this this but we do all have a role to play. We all want cleaner air, improved green spaces, and clearer skies.
We have to start now and make changes to our lifestyle.
Switch to a green energy supplier such as Green Energy UK, Octopus Energy or Ovo Energy. There are plenty to choose from on the market.
Write to your MP and ask them about the Government’s plans to make the changes we need to fulfil our commitments to be Net Zero by 2050.
Cut down on your waste by:
- Say no to plastic (or paper) bags if you don’t need them. It’s easy to take along your own reusable bags when shopping. Keep some spares in your car or handbag so you never forget.
- Request your food take-out order to be provided without the additional plastic carry bag and minus any single-use cutlery.
- Avoid using plastic straws and instead go without or invest in some reusable straws.
- Purchase a reusable cutlery set and bring them along with you when eating out or travelling. You will often have to request that plastic cutlery isn’t automatically given to you when you place your order.
- Invest in a reusable coffee cup and drink bottle.
- Buy some reusable containers to store leftover food at home instead of using large amounts of plastic-wrap and foil. Bring it in for your lunch when you return to the office rather than going out and buying packaged sandwiches.
- Use beeswax wrappers to keep food fresh, instead of clingfilm.
Save energy and water:
- Fully turn off appliances when you’re not using them.
- Get into the habit of turning lights off as you leave a room and invest in energy efficient light bulbs.
- Take shorter showers and turn off the water when you shave and brush your teeth.
- Hang your laundry to dry instead of using energy-draining dryers.
- Use the cold water setting for washing laundry.
Cut down on your meat intake. Limiting how much meat (and dairy) you consume is another major thing you can do to reduce your impact on the planet. The livestock sector produces as much greenhouse gas emissions as all cars, trucks and automobiles combined. In addition, millions of square miles of forests have been and continue to be destroyed for grazing pastures. You don’t have to become a strict vegetarian or vegan to play your part in this!
Shop sustainably and buy fruit and vegetables that are in season in the UK to reduce food miles.
A few simple steps could help you run your home for less as well as producing fewer harmful CO2
emissions. More than half of the energy we use at home is used for heating and hot water.
