A food grocer we helped to fund in the heart of Oldham officially opened last week to help residents in food poverty. Based at the Oldham food pantry in Anchor Mill, the grocer will provide fresh food at a reduced price. Members pay a small weekly amount of £4.50, for which they can choose at least ten items of food, £10,000 was provided by our Neighbourhood Engagement Team which will not only help the grocer make people’s budgets go further but provide
additional opportunities for volunteering and training.
Some of our residents said it would allow them to have enough money to pay for essential bills, save for festivals like Eid or to visit family.
Asmina Choudhury, our Neighbourhood Officer said: “Having a food grocer will provide breathing space for struggling families, offer fresh food to households that would otherwise be limited to cheap, less healthy food and they tackle social isolation. Everything we are doing is aimed at making our communities better, now and in the long term, and we hope it creates a sustainable and long term solution to food poverty.”
