We want to make sure that every Jigsaw resident understands the correct way to safely use and store their mobility scooters.
While we understand the value that mobility scooters can bring to the lives of our residents, they also come with many risks. If the battery is not recharged properly or the scooter is not stored with care, it can become a fire hazard and a blockage to escape routes in the event of a fire.
If you have a mobility scooter, please contact our Connect contact service to let us know so we can make a record and make sure it’s not causing a risk to you or your neighbours.
Before you buy a mobility scooter, it is important that you (or your representative) speak with your Scheme Coordinator or Lettings and Tenancy Officer about this, as permission to store and charge a mobility scooter in a Jigsaw property is required.
Jigsaw needs to make sure that there is a safe space available to properly store and charge the scooter as well as make sure that Fire Safety regulations are met.
Your Scheme Coordinator will fill in a Mobility Scooter request form and agreement form with you which are available in our Mobility Scooter Policy and procedure Statement.
Mobility scooters should not be stored in communal areas because of the fire risk they create. They can be fuel for a fire and they restrict escape routes when trying to leave the building.
To keep you and your neighbours safe you must make sure that you store your scooter in a communal mobility scooter store where possible or, in your home (being careful not to block your own way out) if it is safe and practical to do so.
Scooters should never be taken into a lift or stored in a hallway.
A shared mobility scooter storage space is the best place to charge your scooter, but we understand that this isn’t always possible.
Battery-operated mobility scooters and electric wheelchairs should then be charged within your home if it is safe to do so and Jigsaw has given permission.
You must not charge your scooter in a communal area and always make sure that you do not leave your vehicle on permanent charge. For ways to safely charge your scooter, check the manufacturer’s guidelines.
Please take note that if you have a mobility scooter, we recommend that you have, at the minimum, third-party insurance for it to be stored or recharged in our buildings.
We want to make sure that all our residents are safe and able to move about their homes freely without risk. Therefore we ask that all scooters are limited to a maximum speed of 4mph when moving around in communal areas.
You must demonstrate safe use of your scooter, including being familiar with instructions for use, understanding the controls and operating the mechanisms.
Never leave trailing leads or wires in communal areas or take your scooter in a lift.
We recommend having appropriate insurance in place which includes liability insurance as any damages caused to a property will be recharged to the owner.
In the event of a fire or severe accident requiring medical attention, you must, in the first instance, call Emergency Services on 999.
For accidental damage to a Jigsaw property that doesn’t require emergency services, please inform your Scheme Coordinator or Tenancy Matters Officer
Or
you can report a repair by calling 0300 011 1144 (Tameside and Midlands) or 0300 111 1133 (North).
To apply for permission to store a mobility scooter in a Jigsaw home or mobility scooter storage area, contact our Connect Centre at 0300 011 1144 (Tameside & Midlands) or 0300 111 1133 (North) or email info@jigsawhomes.org.uk.
Alternatively, if you live in a sheltered or supported scheme, speak to your Scheme Coordinator or Tenancy Matters Officer about our mobility scooter policy and what you need to do if you would like to have a scooter at your residence.
Once we receive the form, we will contact you to discuss re-charging the scooter and safe storage arrangements and to check where the most suitable place is in your building for the scooter.
